And According to the bible, life is filled with different kinds of seasons. One season that each of us will inevitably go through at some point is the dry season. These are seasons where maybe you are feel like it is more difficult to feel like you can connect with God. Or maybe you feel like you have lost the fire you had in your heart for Him. Whether these seasons last just a few short weeks, months or years, it can be difficult. And it can leave you wondering if you can ever get that fire in your spirit burning for the Lord again. In this post, I am going to give you five ways you can stay on fire for Jesus.
This post is all about how you get back on fire for Jesus.
#1 – Keep Getting Into The Word
During seasons when you have lost the fire you had for Him, the last thing you probably feel like doing is reading your bible. But keep in mind that the Word of God is alive and supernatural changes occur when you read it. Reading the word can help you get back on fire for Jesus.
Hebrews 4:12 puts it like this: For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.
So regardless of whether you feel like you have lost that fire you had for Him – reading His word has a powerful effect on your soul and spirit. God will see you making this effort for Him when it feels like such a struggle, and He will not forget it.
#2 – Keep Pressing In Even Though You May Not Feel Like It
One of the best things you can do when you feel as though your fire has gone out, is to keep pressing in to Him.
To refrain from doing this could lead to becoming even more distant, just as within a physical relationship. Imagine you are married, and you feel as though you have lost the spark that was once so prevalent. Now imagine that you just went with that and refrained from making any effort with your spouse and started ignoring them. The two of you would grow more and more distant, right?! And and it may even end up being awkward and resulting in you feeling like you barely know each other anymore. It’s the same with God.
What does “pressing in” look like? It looks like prayer. Reading the word. Acknowledging Him in the day to day. Putting on worship and cultivating an atmosphere where He is glorified.
It’s important to keep in mind that us human beings have a sinful nature. Therefore, if we allow ourselves to be fully led by our emotions, they can sometimes have the potential to lead us astray.
Let me elaborate. Regardless of how we feel – whether it’s that we have lost the desire to actively seek Him. Or that we feel that He is distant in a dry season – He is still with us. He has not left us and He is still waiting at the door for us to come to Him and seek Him again. He is still Lord and He always remains the same. Our feelings may cause us to turn to the left or to the right, or to have a greater desire to pursue other things more than Him, but the fact of the matter is that He is still right there, waiting.
#3 – Praise and Worship
Praising and worshipping God is essential in the Christian life for keeping the fire burning. It positions us in a place of adoring Him and meditating on who He is. We have the incredible privilege of coming before the God who created the universe. The Sovereign One who chose each of us before He created the world (Ephesians 1:4). What an indescribable honour that is!
Praising and worshipping has a powerful, supernatural impact. It is much, much more than just the act of singing.
Let’s take a look at three scriptures that show the supernatural side of praise and worship:
Psalm 100:4 says Enter into His gates with thanksgiving, and into His courts with praise. Be thankful to Him, and bless His name.
This verse tells us what happens in the spirit realm when we praise Him. Praising Him is a way we can approach Him and experience His presence.
Acts 16:25-26: But at midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the prisoners were listening to them. Suddenly there was a great earthquake, so that the foundations of the prison were shaken; and immediately all the doors were opened and everyone’s chains were loosed.
Praise and worship is more than just singing to God. It is powerful! And He moves powerfully when we come before Him in this way.
And one more: 2 Chronicles 5:13-14: Indeed it came to pass, when the trumpeters and singers were as one, to make one sound to be heard in praising and thanking the Lord, and when they lifted up their voice with the trumpets and cymbals and instruments of music, and praised the Lord, saying: “For He is good, for His mercy endures forever,” that the house, the house of the Lord, was filled with a cloud, so that the priests could not continue ministering because of the cloud; for the glory of the Lord filled the house of God.
It’s easy to come before the Lord and ask Him for the things we want and need. Now, there is absolutely nothing wrong with doing any of that! But I just wonder – do we ever remember to come before Him just to love on Him for He is? Are there moments where we don’t even ask for anything, but just come before Him purely to sit in His presence and be with Him? Where we praise Him for His goodness and the incredible things He has done?
#4 – Fellowship
Surrounding yourself with Christians who are passionate about God when your fire has gone out is powerful! Hanging out with people who love and are on fire for God is contagious – just as physical fire can spread. These friends can also pray for you if you choose to be open with them about your current struggle, and can help to encourage you and build you up in your faith.
I know that for me, I get so excited when I hang out with godly friends who love the Lord. They share what He is doing in their lives, and the things He is doing in their world. Dreams they have had, things that He is stirring in their hearts, their testimonies of His goodness – that gets me so pumped up and puts extra fuel on my own fire for Him.
#5 – Guard Your Heart
It can be a good idea to be mindful of what you allow yourself to be exposed to. Especially during seasons of having lost that sense of being on fire for Jesus. I’ve heard it said that we are always either moving towards God or drifting away from Him. And it’s so true that sometimes, we can find ourselves drifting away a little even without realising it. Things like certain movies we watch, music we listen to, all have an impact on us whether positive or negative.
This is where the guidance of the Holy Spirit is so important. He can lead us and reveal things that are not so good for us to be fixing our minds and time on.
#6 – Ask Him For Fresh Fire
If you want to be on fire for Jesus again, ask the Holy Spirit to reignite the flame. He knows your every thought. He won’t be shocked if you open up to Him and share your thoughts and feelings with Him about it. Ask Him to set you on fire for the things of Him again.
Remember, too, that He is faithful and He will do a work in you, especially if you are open and willing.
Psalm 107:8-9 says this: Oh, that men would give thanks to the Lord for His goodness, and for His wonderful works to the children of men! For He satisfies the longing soul, and fills the hungry soul with goodness.
This scripture tells us that if you are hungry to get your fire back, He will satisfy that hunger! Ask him, and continue to pursue Him even though it may feel like difficult right now.
My prayer is that you would be set on fire for Jesus again, and that your fire would burn stronger than ever.
He is faithful, friends.
